The signs of a blocked drain

Obstructions in drains build over time and so you may spot a few tell-tale signs:

  • Noise – when water drains from baths, showers, bathrooms basins and kitchen sinks, you’ll probably notice a gurgling sound but if this continues once the water has drained away, it is a sign it is struggling to gain entry to the main drain system. It needs investigating.
  • Smell – dirty water smells. If a blocked drain causes water to pool or stand in the drain system, a bad smell travels back up through pipes and the drain cover.
  • Slow draining water – when you pull the plug, the water in the sink or bath should drain quickly away. If it doesn’t, it is a sign of a blocked or partially blocked drain.
  • A blocked toilet – this could mean an obstruction in the u-bend of the toilet or, in some cases, a blocked drain. Slow draining water when the toilet is flushed is also a sign of a problem deep in the drain system.
  • Water pushing up through the drain cover – when a drain is completely blocked, sewage will be pushed up through the drain cover. If this is the case at your Oxshott property, do not try to unblock it yourself – call us!

Why do drains become blocked?

  • Flushing wet wipes and/or sanitary products – even when these products claim to be flushable, they rarely are. Items flushed down the toilet must disintegrate in water within 30 seconds. Wet wipes don’t, neither do sanitary products. Over time, they will build into a serious obstruction in the drain.
  • Washing fat into the drain – fat should be disposed of by other means, such as into the bin or for commercial premises, by a fat disposal company. Washed into the drain, it simply builds up into a ‘fat berg’.
  • Hair – hair traps on baths and showers are ideal for catching the majority of hair before it washes into the drain. The most common cause of blocked pipes in bathrooms are hairballs.
  • Disposing of food and drink products down the kitchen sink – if it doesn’t dissolve, it shouldn’t be put down the sink. Coffee grounds and tea leaves are just two examples.
  • A collapsed or damaged drain – drains so sometimes collapse because they are old or because they have been damaged such as by tree roots or construction works.

Avoiding blocked drains in the future

It is important to keep drains running freely. Here are a few tips to make that happen:

  • Do not flush away wet wipes and sanitary products, even if they say they are flushable
  • Do not wash away fat but dispose of by using a specialist company or using a solidifying agent and placing in the bin
  • Compost food waste including coffee ground and tea leaves, or recycle in the food waste bin at the kerbside but not into the drain
  • Use a hair trap on showers and baths to stop hairballs from forming in the pipes
  • Consider a CCTV drain survey to check the drain lining for damage

Perfect customer service. I sent an email yesterday evening and I got a call back almost straight away. Even if the issue does not seem to be drain related, they were helping me on the phone very nicely. Definitely will keep them as a contact if I need them in the future. Thank you!

Honest, professional and neat job. Declan and team called round to see the job first, gave us sound advice (saying I didn't need to do some of the work that had been suggested to me), provided a competitive quote and then did a great job. Honestly very impressed with them.
